Twitter users playing big role in ballot battle despite high account dormancy

With the social media itself emerging as a battleground in the battle of the ballot, users of microblogging network Twitter find themselves involved in a big way in the world's largest vote.

While subscribers on Twitter have been instrumental in mustering support for various political parties, a recent report by Twopcharts has shown that almost half of the global users of the microblogging network could not care less.

Twopcharts, that monitors Twitter usage, says, 44 per cent of the total accounts had never posted a tweet, which however, did not mean that the accounts were dormant. It said Twitter could count users that did not tweet as active users when they logged in to Twitter and read timeline.

But for sure, a big part of the accounts that never tweeted were not showing any sign of life anymore and could indeed be considered dormant, the firm said.

With nearly 982 million users on Twitter, the number of people who remained silent was too high. Twopcharts further added that only 47 per cent of the total users had submitted a profile image with their accounts, while those who had submitted a description were even fewer, at 24 per cent.

The statistics showed that 30 per cent of the accounts had sent 1-10 Tweets, while around 13 per cent have tweeted over 100 times, according to Delhi Daily News.

Twitter currently counts around 214 million active users. An active user was one who logged into his Twitter account at least once a month.

In a similar survey conducted by BeeVolve in 2012 it was revealed that 81 per cent Twitter users had less than 50 followers and only 1 per cent users had over 5,000 followers.

The survey also showed that the majority of Twitter users followed less than 50 accounts.
