Mumbai: White goods major Videocon Group, which has secured national telecom licence through its subsidiary Datacom Ltd, will roll out GSM services from Chennai on 15 August.
The company would launch GSM services first in Chennai on 15 August, followed by other metros, Kerala and North India in that order, Videocon chairman Venugopal Dhoot said.
"The national rollout plan will be completed in 18 months," Dhoot said, adding, Datacom has targeted a subscriber base of around 10 million in three to four years.
Datacom has licence to operate telecom services in 22 circles across the country, Dhoot said, adding, the group would invest around Rs6,000 crore in this business as the focus shifts to telecommunications in the coming years.
The Videocon Group has also been in talks with some companies based in the Middle East to rope in a foreign partner for the telecom business.
He said that while the group had a strong cash balance, the foreign partner is also expected to bring in equity in the telecom venture.
