Volkswagen to introduce smaller car for India
14 Jun 2010
According to German auto major Volkswagen it plans to introduce a car smaller than the Polo in India to tap the fast growing compact-car segment in India.
''We will have something smaller than the Polo. We are working on it,'' Kurt Rippholz, India communication head of the Volkswagen group, said yesterday.
Rippolz, however, clarified that nothing had been finalised yet.
Volkswagen started manufacturing operations in India earlier this year investing around Rs3,500 crore at its Chakan plant in Maharashtra. The plant has the capacity to produce 110,000 units of its small car Polo per annum.
''First you have to conceptualise and then assess the market potential,'' Rippholz said.
India's small car market is growing the fastest in the world after China's. The segment makes up about 75 per cent of the total car market in the country.
