Kochi: IT major Wipro has started its operations in Kochi. The 'embedded and product engineering' division of Wipro began functioning at Infopark, Kakkanad, on Friday.
Announcing this at a press conference here, Ramesh Emani, president, embedded and product engineering division, said, "We've been keen about starting our operations in Kochi. Our plan is to build up a 300-member team here. We've begun with a 15-member team now." The company will also conduct recruitment fairs in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram within a month.
The 'embedded and product engineering' division is one of the three major divisions of Wipro Technologies, the other two being IT and BPO. It includes automotive electronics, avionics, computing peripherals, computing platforms and software products, consumer electronics, industrial automation, medical devices, mobile devices and applications, multimedia, product strategy and architecture, semiconductors, storage technologies and VLSI.
Initially, the Kochi centre will focus on VLSI and move on to software. Wipro has already purchased 25.18 acres at Infopark to build its campus. The construction is expected to start within the first quarter of this year.
"The entry of Wipro is a giant step in the development of Kochi. We're sure that other major clients would take the cue. What holds importance in this venture is not the numbers but the quality of technological operations coming to Kochi,'' said K G Girish Babu, CEO, Infopark, who was also present at the press conference.
