Army chief for CBI investigation against senior general
29 Mar 2012
Firing a fresh salvo at the government army chief, general V K Singh sent a May 2011 letter by Trinamool Congress MP Ambika Banerjee to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), asking it to probe complaints against Lt-General Dalbir Singh Suhag, in alleged 'procurement scams' in the Special Frontier Force (SFF), when Suhag was its inspector general.
The SFF comes under the administrative control of the Research & Analysis Wing (RAW). Suhag currently commands the Dimapur-based 3 Corps and is third in line to be army chief.
Meanwhile, as political parties call for the dismissal of the army chief, it is apparent that the government has taken a serious note of his letter to the prime minister being leaked to the media.
Defence minister A K Antony said "appropriate action" would be taken on the leak noted that the contents of Singh's letter could not be a matter of public debate.
The Rajya Sabha was rocked by the contents of the letter with members terming it "disturbing" and "serious" and called on the government to initiate action against those responsible -- "whatever position he holds".
Responding to the outrage of the members, Antony said, "I have made serious note of the observations... After consulting the Prime Minister and colleagues, we will take appropriate action."
