Thirty-eight people were killed and 25 injured in 24 hours in Bihar as monsoon rains spread, the state disaster management department said today.

The department's principal secretary, Vyasji, said the government would give Rs4 lakh compensation to the next of kin of the victims.

Patna is the worst affected, with five dead. The death toll in other districts is: Nalanda (4), Purnia (4), Kaimur(4), Rohtas (4), Sharasha (3), Katihar (3), Buxar (2), Samastipur (2), Muzaffarpur (2), Munger (2), Bhojpur (1), Madhepura (1) and Kishanganj (1).

The death toll might go up as reports are to come in from other districts, department officials said.

Many people were killed by lightning. Four persons are said to have been struck dead by lightning in Aurangabad district, while one person was killed in Saran district. This has not been officially confirmed.

''We're still getting the details of deaths due to lightning from district magistrates of other districts too…it will take some time to reach a final figure of toll due to lightning strike in the State in last 24 hours,'' said. Vyasji.

Reports said seven people were killed in neighbouring Jharkhand by lightning.
