Consumer price inflation for industrial workers down at 13.73 per cent in June

Consumer price inflation based on the consumer price index for industrial workers declined slightly to 13.73 per cent in June 2010 from 13.91 per cent in May 2010.

The all-India consumer price index number for industrial workers (CPI-IW) having base 2001=100, however, increased by 2 points in June 2010.

During the month, the index recorded an increase of 8 points in Varanasi centre, 6 points each in Quilon and Giridih centres, 5 points each in 4 centres, 4 points each in 8 centres, 3 points each in 13 centres, 2 points each in 17 centres and 1 point each in 19 centres.

The index decreased by 1 point each in Ludhiana and Ghaziabad centres, while in the remaining 12 centres the index remained stationary.

Varanasi centre recorded the maximum increase of eight points, mainly due to increase in the prices of rice, wheat, fresh milk, onion, vegetable and fruit, electricity, bus fare, tailoring charges etc.

The 6 point increase in Quilon centre was due to increase in the prices of rice, fish, onion, vegetables and fruit, cigarette, tailoring charges etc while in Giridih it was due to increase in the prices of mustard oil, fish, turmeric powder, vegetable and fruit, soft coke etc.

The decrease of 1 point each in Ludhiana and Ghaziabad centres was due to lower prices of onion, vegetables, sugar, etc.

The indices in respect of the six major centres are as follows: Ahmedabad - 169, Bangalore - 82, Chennai - 162, Delhi - 159, Kolkata - 172, Mumbai - 171.
