Demonetised notes still uncounted: Rajiv, Chidambaram scoff

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and his party colleague and former finance minister P Chidambaram on Thursday poked fun at Reserve Bank of India governor Urjit Patel over his remarks that the scrapped notes from the demonetisation of 8 November last year were still being counted.

"GOI looking for a math tutor. Please apply to PMO ASAP (smiley)," Rahul Gandhi posted on Twitter attaching a report by Firstpost.

Patel had told the Parliamentary standing committee on Wednesday that RBI is yet to find out the exact amount of the demonetised currency and is still in the process of counting it.

Chidambaram too took a dig at the RBI chief, asking if the central bank had not heard of "leasing".

"RBI buying note counting machines eight months after demonetisation! Has the RBI not heard of 'leasing'," the former finance minister tweeted.

The demonetisation last November made all Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes under circulation invalid, in an attempt to tackle untaxed 'black' money, counterfeit currency and terror funding.
