I-T department's central processing unit at Bengaluru to open tomorrow
28 May 2010
The centralised processing centre (CPC) of the income tax department at Bengaluru will start functioning from 29 May. Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will dedicate the CPC to the nation tomorrow.
The income tax department set up the centralised processing centre (CPC) at Bengaluru for bulk processing of income tax returns. The CPC will process all electronic tax returns of the entire country, and physical returns of Karnataka and Goa regions.
The CPC is equipped with a dedicated call centre, where taxpayers can enquire about the status of their returns and refunds. The centre also has a remote record storage unit, which would reduce congestion in the I-T offices.
The CPC is a flagship e-governance project of the Government of India. It promises to significantly improve delivery of citizen-centric services in line with best international practices.
The centralised processing centre at Bengaluru will process around 20, 000 tax returns daily. This will help reduce the physical interface between the taxpayers and the tax administration and speed up procedures and processes, he said.
The centralised processing programme will be taken forward by setting up two more centers during the year.
