The number of coronavirus cases in the country increased by 7,466 in the last 24 hours, taking the total count to 1,65,799 and making India the ninth worst-hit among all Covid-19 hit nations.
The toll from the disease rose to 4,706 on Friday while a total of 71,106 patients have recovered.
Maharashtra remained the biggest contributor to the country’s Covid count with 2,682 cases reported in a single day. The state also recorded 116 deaths on Friday, the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19 in a single day.
As of 10 am on 29 May:
— The number of Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra rose to 59,546 as of 8 am on 29 May. The number of recovered cases rose to18,515 while the number of dead stood at 1,982.
— Tamil Nadu reported 19,372 cases of whom10,548 have recovered and 145 have died.
— In Delhi the number of Covid-19 cases rose to 16,281, with reported recovery of 7,495 and 316 deaths.
— Gujarat reported 15,562 Coronavirus cases, of whom 8,0003 have recovered and 960 have died.
— Tamil Nadu had 19,372 cases. 10,548 people have recovered and 145 people have died due to the disease. On 28 May, 827 new cases were reported.
— Karnataka had a total of 2,533 cases. 834 patients have recovered and the state has reported 47 deaths. A total of 135 new cases were reported in the state on 28 May.
— Kerala has a total of 1,088 cases, with 555 recoveries and 8 deaths. The state reported 84 new cases on 28 May.
— Andhra Pradesh has a total of 3,245 cases, with 2,125 recoveries and 59 deaths. 128 new cases were reported on 28 May.
— Telangana has a total of 2,256 cases, with 1,345 recoveries and 67 deaths. The state saw an increase of 117 cases on 28 May.
As testing increases and due to the influx of people from across India and countries, some states are recording spikes in cases and number of deaths. Experts say that India should still be testing more than it currently is, and the number of cases detected is expected to go up as, states ramp up testing.
India is witnessing a steady rise in the number of Covod-19 cases, especially with the return of some Indians from foreign countries and an acceleration in testing procedures for coronavirus, even as the country remains under an extended lockdown in an attempt to flatten the curve of the novel coronavirus.
The centre had extended the nation-wide lockdown till 31 May and may further extend it in the backdrop of a spike in corona-positive cases in the country.
The number of Covid-19 cases across the world stood at 58,10,331 with 3,60,332 deaths (according to the map by Johns Hopkins) as of 29 May.
