India's consumer price inflation almost nil in April

Consumer price inflation based on the all-India consumer price index for April 2011 stood at 106, unchanged from the previous month while the indices for the rural and urban areas stood at 108 and 105, respectively showing minor increases from the previous month.
CPI for April 2011 remained unchanged despite an increase in the prices of fruits and protein-based food items during the month.
The all-India (rural plus urban) index for 'fruits' rose 10 per cent in April 2011 from the corresponding index of March 2011 while the index for 'vegetables' declined 4 per cent during the month.
Other items that showed increases include egg, fish and meat whose indices rose almost 2 per cent in April compared to the level in March 2011. The index for milk also went up marginally to 110 points.
The index rose 3.64 per cent for pan and tobacco at 114 points, while condiments and spices were up by 1.75 per cent to 116 points.
Overall, the 'food, beverages and tobacco' segment of the CPI moved up to 107 points in April from 106 in the previous month.
