Inflation rate up at 8.98 per cent in March

The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index stood at 8.98 per cent (provisional) in March 2011 against 8.31 per cent (provisional) in the previous month and 10.23 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year.
The revised inflation rate for January was also higher at 9.35 per cent against 8.23 per cent reported earlier.
The spike has been driven higher fuel and manufacturing costs.
Build-up of inflation so far during the financial year was 8.98 per cent against 10.23 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.
The official wholesale price index for 'all commodities' (base: 2004-05=100) rose 1.4 per cent to 148.0 during March 2011 from 146.0 (provisional) in the previous month.
The index for the `primary group' declined 0.2 per cent to 187.4 (provisional) during March 2011 from 187.8 (provisional) in the previous month.
