Consumer price inflation based on the revised consumer price index (CPI) for rural and urban population in the country rose at an annual rate of 6 per cent in January 2011.

The new series takes its base year as 2010 and the indices are taken from a cross-section of retail price movements across rural and urban India, an official release said.

The provisional all-India consumer price index (CPI) for the rural, urban and combined (rural + urban) in January 2011 stood at 107, 104 and 106, respectively, data showed.

The current consumer price index does not include indices for some states and union territories for want of adequate data for these states and union territories, the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) said in a release today.

The provisional data released today will be revised at the time of release of provisional indices in March 2011, the release said.

The practice will continue for a period of one year till the series gets stabilised and the flow of price data smoothens.
