The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), the largest truckers' body in the country, has threatened to call an indefinite strike starting 5 August midnight to protest against the present toll policy.

The body demanded that the government reduce the toll tax for which it has given an ultimatum of 5 August. According to the association the government's failure to come out with a solution would force 60 lakh trucks off the roads.

According to the association president, G R Shanmugappa, the truckers from southern India affiliated to the body would strike from 1 August midnight itself.

He said due to the faulty toll policy the truckers were losing Rs5,000 crore a day.

"We have decided to go on indefinite strike from August 6 opposing the present hefty toll charges levied on vehicles, which has become the death knell for the road transport industry,'' Shanmugappa told reporters in New Delhi.

Truckers had earlier resorted to strikes in July 2008, January 2009 and July 2009 for redressal of  their grievances, including `irrational' toll charges.
