The US on Thursday announced $100,000 in aid to the victims of the recent floods in southern and western parts of India.

Announcing the aid US ambassador to Indian Timothy J Roemer said, the hearth-breaking personal loss, the destruction of homes and property and the loss of cattle and crops had been devastating.

According to a US embassy release he also offered condolences to the families of those killed and to those rendered homeless in the disaster.

Heavy rain and floods last week left many parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra under water leaving over 200 dead and rendering millions of people homeless.

Over the past seven years, the US has extended over $16 million in aid towards various disaster management measures in India.

US agencies have partnered with Indian disaster management professionals to share knowledge and expertise, improve disaster preparedness and protect most vulnerable citizens.
