Unruly MPs force adjournment of both houses of Parliament for second day
23 Nov 2011
The winter session of Parliament is likely to be a washout this year, with MPs from almost all parties, including allies of the United Progressive Alliance, stubbornly refusing to let both houses to function.
Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned till Thursday after parliamentarians refused to allow the functioning of the two houses. In the lower house, several elected members rushed to the well of the house, demanding discussion of their favourite topics, ignoring the pleas for order by the speaker.
The house was adjourned for an hour at the start and when it reassembled again at noon, members did not allow it to function, resulting in an adjournment for the rest of the day.
Even in the upper house, members began shouting slogans from the start, not allowing it to function.
The Left parties are keen to move an adjournment motion on price rise and a discussion on inflation was listed to take place on Wednesday. However, the speaker had rejected the Left's plea for an adjournment motion and had listed it under rule 193 that does not include voting. This led to protests from the left MPs.
The BJP members wanted a discussion on corruption and black money, while several other regional parties had their own agendas.
