10 Aug 2013
YSR Congress president and Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and his mother Y S Vijaya, who is honorary president of YSRC and MLA from Pulivendula in Kadapa, reigned today adding to the number of lawmakers who have quit over the central government's proposal to create a separate Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.
Jaganmohan Reddy tendered his resignation, protesting the manner in which the Congress party sought to divide Andhra Pradesh. His mother Y S Vijaya, who is honorary president of YSRC and MLA from Pulivendula in Kadapa district, too, resigned as MLA.
Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions are witnessing widespread agitation over the UPA government's decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh, which would leave the coastal bet poorer.
Jagmohan Reddy, who is currently in jail on corruption charges and lodged at Chanchalguda prison, faxed his resignation letter to Lok Sabha speaker through jail authorities.
Jagmohan Reddy (40), who heads YSR Congress, the split wing of the Congress, has been lodged in the jail as ''a prisoner on-trial'' ever since he was slapped with an illegal assets case on 28 May 2012.
The case is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The resignation letters of both Jganmohan Reddy and his mother Vijaya will simultaneously also be sent by post as well, YSRC MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy said.
Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy had sent his resignation to the Lok Sabha speaker on 5 August.
The YSR Congress, which has 17 MLAs and two MPs, strongly supports a united Andhra Pradesh.
Sixteen MLAs of YSRC had submitted their resignations two days before the Congress came out with its 30 July decision to create Telangana by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh.
