Modi does a hat trick in Gujarat; Cong wrests control in Himachal

Narendra Modi swung back to power in Gujarat, leading the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) to victory for a third time in a row, winning 115-seats against rival Congress party's 61 seats.

However, the BJP suffered a body blow in Himachal Pradesh where Veerbhadra Singh and the Congress party staved off corruption charges to wrest power from BJP, with a majority of 36 in the 68-member assembly.

The BJP won just 26 seats while others secured 6 seats.

The failure of the ruling BJP in Himachal Pradesh is attributed more to severe infighting and rebel candidates rather than the anti-incumbency factor.

Analysts see BJP win in Gujarat more as a Modi feat rather than as the party's success. It was more of a vote for Modi's development politics, they say.

''The people have spoken yet again and they have spoken loud and clear! The results of the 2012 Gujarat assembly elections have yet again established the victory of development politics and good governance over everything else,'' Modi also posted on his blog.
