Kochi: The Kerala state government will soon seek an expression of intent for taking up the Rs 2,500-crore development activities at Vizhinjam Port, which enjoys close proximity to international shipping routes.
Kerala Minister for Ports M V Raghavan said advertisements will be placed in newspapers for the purpose. Vizhinjam Port has the potential to pick up a major share of the international container traffic.
According to sources, Vizhinjam Port development envisaged creation of a mega transhipment hub, with 30 berths to handle containers, general cargo and petroleum products. It will also have a full-fledged bunkering facility, free-trade zone and a passenger berth.
Vizhinjam,
with a natural draft of 25 metres within one nautical
mile, is least prone to littoral drifts. The proximity
of the international shipping lane will provide a locational
advantage to the port.
