Tata Motors on Saturday initiated work on a new manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu that will produce next-generation vehicles for Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

The Rs9,000-crore factory, to come up at Panapakkam in Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu, will produce passenger vehicles for Indian and international markets.

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said the plant will design, develop and manufacture the next generation cars and SUVs, including electric and luxury vehicles for the Tata Motors Group.

Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin laid the foundation stone for the plant.

The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility will be a major step in promoting the government’s policy of promoting indigenous manufacturing for exports (Make in India, For the World).

Tata Motors said the new plant with global benchmarks will use 100 per cent renewable power for operations, setting a new benchmark in automobile manufacturing.

The greenfield facility has been designed to manufacture 250,000 vehicles per annum with production starting in phased manner over a 5-7-year period, Chandrasekaran said.

The new facility will have the potential to create over 5,000 jobs besides providing opportunities for skill-development in and around the plant.
