China rising to topple US dominance: Pew survey
19 Jul 2013
Is China on the way to overtaking the US as the world's leading superpower and top player in the world economy?
Participants in a new Pew Research Center survey that polled 38,000 people in 39 countries largely endorsed the belief that China was well on its way.
Overall, the majority of respondents in only six of the countries surveyed believed the US would retain its dominance .
"Publics around the world believe the global balance of power is shifting," Pew wrote. "China's economic power is on the rise, and many think it will eventually supplant the United States as the world's dominant superpower."
The survey also pointed out that an increasing number of the respondents in the US and China, agreed with the thesis.
Two out of three Chinese now predict their country would overtake the US, an eight percentage point rise since 2008, with the number of Americans who agreed increasing 11 percentage points to 47 per cent.
