Donald Trump rode back to power in the United States capping a fiercely contested campaign for presidency, overcoming a wave of intimidation, criminal cases and indictments by a desperate opposition.
Trump, 78, already won the presidency securing over 279 electoral votes by 5:45 am ET (1045 GMT), with several states yet to be counted.
His opponent Kamala Harris managed to win 223 electoral college votes, so far.
Trump's victory was driven by voter concerns on economy and immigration while Kamala Harris, who harped on “threats to democracy” failed to address voter concerns of lawlessness and threat to economy.
Trump overcame a backlash within his own Republican Party over his false claims of election fraud that led to the mobbing of the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, and the opposition challenge.
With Donald Trump assuming presidency, Ohio Senator JD Vance (40) will become the vice president.
Although Republicans secured a majority in the US Senate, neither party seems to have the strength to take control of the House of Representatives.
Voters, frustrated by rising prices, amidst rising wages and employment, seems to have lost their confidence in the administration led by President Joe Biden. Even Hispanics and Asian migrants who were hit by Trump’s anti-immigration policies, trusted Trump to address these issues.
This was evident as Trump emerged victor in the swing state of Wisconsin that pushed him over the threshold 270 electoral collaege votes.
Trump’s second term at the White house could widen the political divide between the liberal Democrats and the conservative Republicans.
Trump’s victory will also have its impact on US trade and climate change policies, and immigration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election and said he looked forward to renew and strengthen the India-US strategic partnership.
