Cuba could serve as model for protection of children's rights: UN official
21 Nov 2009
Cuba is among the countries that have best implemented the proposals of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, according to the United Nations Children's Fund's (UNICEF) representative in Cuba.
The world could learn a lot from Cuba's experience on the protection of the rights of the child, Jose Juan Ortiz said on Friday in Havana.
Oritz was speaking at the celebrations marking Universal Children's Day. He said Cuba is still under an embargo and suffers frequent natural disasters but has significantly reduced child mortality and improved child nutrition - to levels that can rival those of developed countries.
He added that thanks to the government's political will Cuba has been able to rapidly advance the cause of the welfare of children.
He said that all countries of the world could follow Cuba's example to meet the targets set by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
On Friday, a variety of activities were held nationwide in the country to mark the celebration of the Universal Children's Day.
Exactly 20 years ago, the countries of the world adopted the declarations under the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC) that aim to achieve a set of goals to secure the rights of children all over the world.
