Strike hits services at PSU banks
07 Sep 2010
The banking sector in the country was partially affected by the all India strike called by some nine trade unions today. The shutdown throughout the country, but mainly in Leftist-dominated states like West Bengal, Kerala and Manipur, affected the banks in these states, where unions like CITU have a stronghold.
About five lakh members of the All-India Banks Employees' Association (AIBEA) supported the nation-wide strike call given by the trade unions. However, State Bank of India officers' and employees' unions were not part of the strike.
The nation-wide strike was announced over major issues like price rise, the disinvestment policy of the government and violation of labour laws.
