Several dehumidifier brands recalled
04 Nov 2016
A recall had been issued for several brands of dehumidifiers that could overheat, smoke and catch fire.
A dehumidifier is generally a household appliance which reduces the level of humidity in the air, usually for health or comfort reasons, or to eliminate musty odour.
According to the manufacturer, no injuries had been reported, but 38 instances of smoke and fire had been reported, which worked out to nearly $4.8 million in property damages.
The recall includes 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 65, 70, and 75-pint dehumidifiers, sold under various brand names. Airworks, Alen, Arctic King, Arcticaire, Beaumark, Comfort Star, ComfortAire, etc.
The units were sold by stores including Lowes, Menards, PC Richard and others across the US from January 2003 through December 2013.
Consumers would need to turn off and unplug the dehumidifiers, and contact the manufacturer, Midea, for either a partial refund, or a replacement. Dehumidifiers purchased before 1 October, 2008 would be entitled to a partial refund, but not a replacement.
Manufacturing dates can be found on the back of the units. To check their eligibility for a refund or replacement users could visit www.recallrtr.com/dehumidifier and enter the information for their product.
