US court says Union Carbide not liable in Bhopal tragedy
28 Jun 2012
A New York federal court has dismissed all claims by victims of the Bhopal gas leak that killed thousands of people in India 28 years ago and said Union Carbide Corp is not liable for any environmental fallout of a gas leak.
Union Carbide has already transferred ownership to another US company Dow Chemicals to avoid liability in the US.
Bhopal gas victims and environmental activists have also been protesting against Dow Chemical's sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The US court now holds that since Union Carbide had sold its stake in the Indian unit, it's not liable for the clean-up.
The US parent sold its holding in Union Carbide India Ltd, the unit involved in the leak, in 1994 and has since been renamed Eveready Industries India Ltd.
The Bhopal Group for Information and Action, which spearheaded the case in US courts, said it would go for an appeal in the case.
