New Delhi: Moving ahead of nations like Russia and China, India has jumped 35 places to become the 88th best country in the world to live, according to a survey. It also means that it has become the second best place in the Indian sub-continent to live, after Bhutan.
These rankings have been awarded by the 2010 Quality of Life Index, published by travel magazine International Living.
France retains its top billing as the best place to live in for the fifth consecutive year, followed by Australia, Switzerland, and Germany. The US slips to the seventh position, which marks a loss of four positions.
The index identifies Sweden as the costliest country in the world.
For India it is a dramatic rise, not only in the world rankings but also in its own region where it was the fourth best country in the sub-continent after Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka in 2009.
In contrast, Pakistan ranks 178 overall.
The index, which is in its 30th edition, ranks 194 nations in nine categories: cost of living, culture and leisure, economy, environment, freedom, health, infrastructure, safety and risk, and climate.
