Bids for an all-India 3G licence near Rs15,000 crore
14 May 2010
Bid amount for a set of pan-India third-generation (3G) mobile spectrum licence reached Rs15,000 crore (about $3.4 billion) on the 29th day of the auction against a base price of Rs3,500 set on 9 April when the auction began.
At Rs15,000 crore from one bidder, the auction could rake in over Rs60,000 crore fore the government from four likely winners.
This includes three from the auction and one set to state-run telecom firms, which would have to match the highest bid price paid by the private operators - plus one extra licence each in five of the 22 telecom zones.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said it has completed 162 rounds of bidding as of Thursday.
Nine mobile operators, including Bharti Airtel , Reliance Communications and Vodafone's Indian unit, are participating in the auction for 3G spectrum.
3G spectrum would allow firms to offer high-speed internet and other premium services such as video calling on mobile phone.
