Micromax, which is known for its low-cost handsets, is now adding to its product offering with its entry into the home entertainment segment in India. The company has introduced six LED TVs, two home theatre systems, a 3D Blu Ray player and a Smart Stick Android dongle.
The LED TVs range from 24-inch to 55-inch and have been priced between Rs15,990 and Rs1,29,990. The company has also launched two home theatre models HT037F1 and HT089F1 - with price tags of Rs5,990 and Rs6,990.
Micromax's 3D Blu Ray player which supports 2D and 3D video/audio formats is priced Rs6,490.
The Micromax Smart Stick Android dongle is pitched at consumers who wish to convert their TV into an Android TV and is powered by Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. The 1 GHz Android dongle, which has a standard HDMI interface, internal 4GB nand flash and Wi-fi direct connection, is priced at Rs4,990. It also supports keyboard, mouse and game pad connections.
The company has plans to introduce its products initially across nine states - Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, MP, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Punjab.
Around 17 million televisions were sold in India in 2011, of which around 12 million were conventional television sets. Though, the market share of Indian brands is considerable in the traditional CRT TV space, the flat-panel display (FPD) television is dominated by global brands such as Samsung, LG , Sony and others. According to trade magazine, TV VEOPAR journal, the FPD market in India was around 4.5 million sets in 2011.
According to industry experts, the sector is likely to become more competitive with the entry of Micromax, resulting in price cuts.
