IKEA giving its famous carry bag a new design
10 Jun 2016
Global home and office furnishing store IKEA is getting a new makeover and the first to get a taste of the change is its iconic blue-and-yellow carry bag (known as the Frakta), which is getting a new design. IKEA has tasked Danish design brand Hay to redesign the Frakta and make it fashionable at a low price.
The blue-and-yellow of the old Fraktas will be replaced with an understated forest green and white pattern, and the crinkly polypropylene material will be replaced with a thin woven fabric.
The new design will also shed the IKEA logo and the bags redesigned by Hay will come without any obvious branding.
The new bags should be available later this year, alongside the classic Fraktas. No price details have been announced for the new Frakta bag, though the material cost should be similar to other woven thin fabric totes available at stores and supermarkets –possibly a little more expensive than $0.99.
Starting 1996, the classic Big Blue bags that can carry around 12 kg (without getting ripped) have sold more than 3 million pieces annually in America alone. The bag is rated for about 1,000 trips.
Meanwhile, a BusinessLine report quoting IKEA CEO Peter Agnefjall said the company is looking at sourcing not just the mandatory 30 per cent, but lot more in India.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Democratic Design Days, Agnefjall indicated that the company will adopt a multi-channel retail approach to reach out to the many customers alongside front-end retailing. The company said that it is on track to hit the €50-billion sales target by 2020.
