India has a wind power generation potential of 695.5 GW against an installed capacity of 39.99 GW, showing a huge untapped potential of over 655 GW at 120 meter above ground level, as per the wind resource assessment conducted by the National Institute of Wind Energy.

The installed wind power and nuclear power generation capacity of the country are 39.99 GW and 6.78 GW respectively, as of 31 October 2021.
The tariff of wind power generation discovered in latest bid of SECI is Rs2.69-2.70 per unit as per the latest bid round. Against this the cost of nuclear power works out to an average Rs3 per unit.
The government has taken steps specifically for promoting wind energy. These include concessional rate of custom duty and duty exemption on certain components required for manufacturing of wind electric generators.
Generation Based Incentive (GBI) is being provided to the wind projects commissioned on or before 31 March 2017.
Besides, the government offers technical support, including wind resource assessment and identification of potential sites through the National Institute of Wind Energy, Chennai.
Union minister for power and new and renewable energy R K Singh gave this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
