Telephone subscriber growth dips 13 per cent in February

Telecom service providers in the country added a total of 13.42 million connections (wireline and wireless) during February 2009, down 13 per cent from the 15.26 million connections added in January 2009.

The total number of telephone connections reached 413.85 million at the end of February 2009 as compared to 400.05 million in January 2009.

With this, the overall tele-density has reached 35.65 at the end of February 2009 as against 34.50 in January 2009, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in a website release.

The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA & WLL(F)) base stood at
376.12  million at the end of February 2009.

A total of 13.44 million wireless subscribers have been added during February 2009 as against 15.41 million wireless subscribers added during the month of January 2009.

In the wireline segment, the subscriber base has decreased to 37.73
million in February 2009 as against 37.75 million subscribers in January 2009 registering a drop of 0.02 million.

Total broadband subscriber base has reached 5.85 million by the end of February 2009 as compared to 5.65 million by the end of January 2009, TRAI said in its release.
