Social networking drains UK employers £14 billion a year
06 Aug 2010
Over half of British employees, in a recent survey, have admitted to updating their personal Twitter, Facebook and MySpace profiles while at work, while a third said they spent half an hour a day using the websites.
The study found that two million people comprising around 6 per cent of Britain's 34 million-strong workforce spend an hour every day adding friends, uploading pictures and videos and tweeting.
Analysts fear the resulting productivity loss could amount to as much as £14 billion a year.
However, many workers remain in denial about the negative effects of using work time at social networking sites according to the survey, which polled 1,000 British employees.
The study was conducted by MyJobsGroup.uk, a network of regional jobsites in the UK.
Of those surveyed, only 14 per cent said they are less productive as a result of social media whereas 10 per cent said using Facebook and Twitter at the workplace contribute to enhancing their productivity.
