Indian employees value job security, congenial environment over salry: survey

High salary seems to hold less appeal for a majority of Indian employees who  value job security and pleasant colleagues more at the work place, says a survey.

According to HR services firm Randstad's Workmonitor survey for the 2012 second quarter, released yesterday, "Eighty-two per cent of the employees surveyed in India attach a premium to pleasant colleagues , which is the second highest in the world after China and it is well above the world average of 60 per cent."

Noting that Indian employees were willing to compromise on salary for pleasant colleagues and job security, the survey said people in India worked to live rather than live to work.

The findings come after researchers conducted 400 online interviews in each of the more than 32 countries covered including India.

Still, around 68 per cent of those surveyed said,  a better salary was more important than enjoying the work they did. According to Randstad India MD & CEO E Balaji, considering employees spent most of their hours at work, salary was often not enough to keep them happy at work.

According to Balaji, it was imperative that HR managers created a work environment with a sense of community.
