BJP’s Bangaru Laxman convicted for taking Rs1 lakh from fake arms dealer

Bangaru Laxman, former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been convicted of accepting Rs1 lakh from a fake arms dealer in a fictitious deal 11 years ago.
Additional sessions judge Kanwaljeet Arora convicted him for accepting Rs1 lakh from a fake arms dealer in a fictitious contract to supply thermal binoculars to the Army.
"The CBI has been able to establish the case of accepting Rs1 lakh bribe against Bangaru Laxman. Accused Bangaru Laxman stands convicted for the offence under Section 9 (taking gratification for exercise of personal influence with public servant) of the Prevention of Corruption Act," the judge said.
Laxman, a former minister in the NDA government at the centre led by the Bhartiya Janata Party, was caught on camera in a sting operation accepting money in his chamber in the party headquarters.
Laxman was caught on camera accepting money in a 2001 sting operation conducted by news portal tehelka.com. The portal released the video CDs on 13 March 2001.
The sting operation that created a huge political storm, had cost Laxman his party post.
