Gu Kailai, the wife of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai stood trial yesterday as biggest scandal to hit China in years reached its climax.
The wife of a top Chinese politician "used brutal means" to murder a British businessman, after she lured him to a hotel room where she poisoned him when he was drunk, a court was told yesterday.
According to prosecutors, Gu Kailai, fallen political star Bo Xilai's wife, masterminded the murder of Neil Heywood, 41 after he threatened the "physical safety" of her 24-year-old son, Bo Guagua.
On 13 November last year Gu allegedly drank tea and alcohol with Heywood in the southwestern mega-city of Chongqing before she poured poison into Heywood's mouth.
Zhang Xiaojun, a 33-year-old family servant, also implicated in the trial, helped carry out the murder, prosecutors said.
The accusations were not contested by either of the defendants, the court said in a statement issued after the seven-hour trial had ended.
