Charges framed against 5 in gang-rape case; trail to start on 5 February

A fast-track court today framed charges against five of the six accused of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus on 16 December 2012 and criminally assaulting her that led to her death later.

The framing of the charges now paves the way for the trial of the five from Tuesday, 5 February.

The sixth accused, escaped trail along with the five since he was found to be below 18 years and is being tried in a juvanile court.

The five accused, Ram Singh, a bus driver, and his brother Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller, Vinay Sharma, a gym instructor and Akshay Thakur, a bus cleaner, are currently lodged in Tihar Jail.

Additional sessions judge Yogendra Khanna charged the five of murder, gang-rape and kidnapping, among others, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The five also face charges of unnatural offence, destruction of evidence, attempt to murder, causing hurt while committing robbery, dacoity with murder, and common intent.
