Delhi gang-rape victim dies at Singapore hospital, body being flown in

The body of the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim, who died following multi-organ failure early on Saturday morning at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital, is being flown back to the national capital in a chartered aircraft.
Thousands of angry citizens poured out in silent protests in Delhi and other cities across the nation after the victim gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a Delhi bus on 16 December, succumbed to injuries, at the Singapore hospital.
The government had flown her to Singapore on Thursday for treatment at the multi-organ transplant facility at Mount Elizabeth hospital. But the victim's condition deteriorated over the past 24 hours and she breathed her last at 2.15 am (India time) on Saturday.
The brutal gang-rape in a Delhi bus shocked the nation and thousands joined in protests over the past few days. An inept government initially failed to realise the public fury, and ministers and political leaders were clueless on how to tackle the growing protests.
But, after unruly elements hijacked the demonstrations earlier in the week, the police were forced to fire teargas shells and use water cannon to disperse the protestors. A police constable, who was attacked by some hooligans, died at a hospital.
The Delhi police on Saturday added murder charges against the six men accused of attacking the victim, a physio-therapy student. The police plan to file the charges next week.
