Dhiraj Hinduja to take over as chairman of Ashok Leyland
20 Oct 2010
The $25 billion Hinduja group will see a change of guard at its flagship Ashok Leyland with Dheeraj Hinduja, the son of Gopichand Hinduja, replacing current chairman RJ Shahaney.
The board of Ashok Leyland, which meets in Chennai today to announce the company's second quarter results, is also expected to approve the proposal to appoint Dheeraj Hinduja as the new chairman.
Dheeraj (39), a third generation Hinduja, is expected to oversee the expansion of India's second largest truck maker.
The exit of the 80-year old current chairman R J Shahaney coincides with the truck maker's two joint ventures with Nissan Motors Co Ltd that are ready to take off.
The ALL-Nissan joint ventures will roll out light commercial vehicles and make engine and spare parts.
Dheeraj, who was co-chairman of ALL for over the past 18 months, was also actively involved in the company's overseas acquisitions of British bus maker Optare Plc in July and the acquisition of light truck marker AVIA AS in Prague in 2006.
