The award we are referring to is the Qimpro Quality award, instituted since 1990 by Qimpro Consultants who are pioneers in the quality movement in this country. Claimed to be the highest quality citation in this country, the award is also recognised by the American Society for Quality and the UK-based Institute of Quality Assurance. The award is aimed at contributing towards improving the quality of life in India through healthcare and education and to recognise individual excellence.
The Qimpro Platinum Standard award is given to a person who is considered to be a statesman for national quality. And this year, joining a list of illustrious names, is Dr. Jamshed Irani, managing director of Tata Steel who has won maximum awards for quality this year. The award caps a huge effort made by Dr. Irani to transform Tata Steel from an old-age management company to a forward-looking new world leader.
The platinum standard recognises people who are considered to be quality statesmen at a national level. These are people who serve as a role model for making quality improvement a way of life. They have achieved outstanding results in a variety of areas like community satisfaction, corporate governance, research and development, exports, environment protection, health and safety and education and training.
In keeping with convention, this year's award was decided by a panel headed by Mr. FC Kohli, chairman of India's largest software company, Tata Consultancy Services and the winner of last year's platinum standard.
The panel for this year comprised Mr Niraj Bajaj, managing director of Mukand, Prof Y K Bhushan, director, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mr. Chandra Mohan, Twenty First Century Battery and winner of the Qimpro Platinum Standard 1995, Mrs Urvi A Piramal, vice chairperson, Piramal Enterprises, Mr Ratan K Shah, president, Vikram Ispat, Mr R V Ramachandran, chairman, Qimpro Consultants, Dr Shakuntala S Lulla, director, Qimpro Consultants and Mr Suresh Lulla, managing director, Qimpro Consultants.
