Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed is reported to have sought refuge in the Indian High Commission in Male after a Maldivian court issued an arrest warrant against him.
Foreign ministry officials in New Delhi said Nasheed has sought refuge in the mission.
Senior officials, including the National Security Advisor and foreign secretary got into a series of meetings to decide on the issue.
The former Maldivian president had sought a meeting with the High Commissioner D M Mulay, who flew back to the Maldives early morning today from Delhi.
''Nasheed has also moved for a stay against the arrest warrant,'' official sources said.
''Mindful of my own security and stability in the Indian Ocean, I have taken refuge at the Indian High Commission in Maldives,'' Nasheed tweeted.
