Surinder Jakhar, chairman of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), the world's largest fertiliser cooperative, died of gunshots at his farmhouse at Abohar, some 125 km from Firozpur in Punjab.

Jakhar , 56, son of former Congress leader and Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar, was fatally wounded while cleaning his pistol, reports quoting police sources said.

Surinder, who was hit on his temple, was rushed to the hospital by his driver, where he was declared brought dead, according to members of his family.

Jakhar is reported to have been injured while cleaning his licensed weapon and police investigating the incident said there seemed to be no foul play.

A family statement to the police said he was killed in an accidental fire from his pistol at his farmhouse in Maujgarh village, Abohar. The family is also reported to have requested "no action" in the matter as the death was "accidental."

The exact cause of death, however, is yet to be ascertained.
