Karti has Rs120 lakh crore stashed away abroad: Swamy
21 Feb 2017
In a sensational allegation, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Subramanian Swamy has claimed that former union minister P Chidambaram's son Karti has 21 undeclared foreign bank accounts. According to Swamy, Karti has around Rs120-lakh crore stashed in these accounts.
In a press conference, Swamy said the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate have been given information about this, but they haven't been able to pursue the case against Karti. He said Karti hasn't responded to three summonses from the ED.
Karti has reacted to the controversy tweeting, ''Some outrageous claims have been made about me. My filings are up to date n completely in compliance with regulatory/statutory requirements.''
He added in another tweet, ''My family's n my assets are duly reflected in our IT filings. My companies have made all declarations as required by statutory requirements.''
Swamy, a Rajya Sabha member, is also unhappy with his own party, claiming that the BJP is trying to dilute a specific section of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), which can be used to convict both Karti and P Chidambaram. He has furnished a list of 21 offshore bank accounts of Karti Chidambaram.
Swamy claims that a whistleblower from the tax authorities handed him the list of offshore accounts, none of which were declared to the tax authorities. According to him, under pressure from Chidambaram, tax authorities have deliberately gone slow and have not put the noose around the accused.
Swamy has written to the PM alleging complicity of the tax officials with Chidambaram for lax investigation in the Aircel-Maxis scam.
After the verdict convicting Tamil Nadu's Sasikala in a disproportionate assets case, Swamy had warned that his next target will be Chidambaram and he apparently is following up on it.
