Pak terrorist Ajmal Kasab hanged at Yerwada Jail
21 Nov 2012
Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving gunman in the 2008 attacks on Mumbai, was hanged to death at Pune's Yerwada Jail on Wednesday at 7.30 am.
In a secret operation codenamed X, launched earlier this month after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected Kasab's mercy petition, authorities in Delhi and Mumbai coordinated to swiftly execute the terrorist without any information leaks.
Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in Delhi after the execution that Pakistan had been informed about it, but the government had not sought his body.
After Kasab's mercy petition was rejected by Mukherjee on 5 November, Shinde sent the papers recommending his execution to the Maharashtra government two days later.
The authorities then decided to execute him in Pune's historic Yerwada Jail on the morning of 21 November.
On Monday, when much of the national media was focussed on the aftermath of the death of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, Kasab was quietly shifted from his high-security prison cell at the Arthur Road jail in central Mumbai to Yerwada.
