A group of intellectuals, including former Central Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal and former Chief Justice of the Madras High Court T S Arunachalam, have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that Swamy, whose efforts had led to "effective investigation" and judicial action in many cases of corruption, was facing threat in Tamil Nadu.
"As the state is getting ready for assembly elections, some political activists have indulged in burning Swamy's effigies in many places. Some had made threatening remarks against him," the letter said.
Swamy has sought the governor's sanction to prosecute Karunanidhi in a land scam.
Swami is also fighting the union shipping ministry's plan to demolish `Ramasethu' as part of Sethusamudram project and the planned take-over of Chidambaram Nataraja temple by the TN government.
They also recalled instances of attack on Swamy by some persons inside a court in 2009 and the ransacking of his office by anti-social elements in 2008.
"As a politician, Swamy has an impeccable record; and been admired by reputed universities world over as a professor of economics," they said.
They asked the prime minister to take "immediate steps to provide the highest security" to Swamy.
