S Raman takes charge as whole time member of SEBI

S Raman has taken over charge as whole time member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in Mumbai. He will serve a five-year term, or till attainment of 65 years of age whichever is earlier, the market regulator said in a release on Friday.
Raman was chairman and managing director of Canara Bank during the period September 2010 to September 2012 before assuming charge as whole time member of SEBI.
A post-graduate and a gold medalist in economics, Raman also holds a diploma in business management, besides CAIIB from the Indian Institute of Bankers and ACIB from the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London.
Raman joined Bank of India in 1974. He handled varied portfolios such as corporate credit, international banking, human resources etc during his career with postings in different locations such as Nagpur, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Bhubaneshwar etc. He also had two stints overseas at Jersey (UK) from 1983 to 1987 and as Chief Executive of their US Operations from June 2005 to October 2008.
Raman served Union Bank of India as executive director from October 2008 to August 2010 where he oversaw treasury, corporate credit and transaction banking, etc.
Other whole time members of SEBI include -- Rajeev Kumar Agarwal and Prashant Saran.
