Shyam Saran quits as PM's special envoy
19 Feb 2010
Shyam Saran, special envoy of the prime minister for Indo- US nuclear issues and at the climate change talks, has tendered his resignation. He will demit office on 14 March 2010.
A government release today said, "Shyam Saran, special envoy of the prime minister for Indo-US nuclear issues and for climate change, has been permitted to demit office with effect from 14 March 2010."
There was speculation that the decision comes after the appointment of Shiv Shankar Menon as National Security Advisor (NSA). Both were foreign secretaries and had retired.
Saran retired three years ago while Menon retired late last year. While Menon was given the rank of Minister of state following his appointment as NSA, Saran was yet to get it, the report said.
No official reasons were available for his decision.
