Attention has turned to the city of Surat in Gujarat after it was revealed on Friday that Eliza Kewark, Prince William's great, great, great, great, great grandmother was of Indian origin.

Prince William is second in line for the British monarchy after his father Prince Charles.

Kewark gave birth to Prince William's great, great, great, great grandmother, Katharine Scott Forbes. Though Kerwark – a housemaid – has so far been officially labelled as Armenian, she was at least half-Indian with a Gujarati parent, as reported in domain-b on Friday.

The tests revealed that William carries Kewark's mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which can only be transmitted from the mother's side.
