Sushma Nath to replace Ashok Chawla as finance secretary

Sushma Nath, a 1974-batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, is all set to replace Ashok Chawla as the finance secretary.
Chawla, the finance secretary looking after the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), is due to retire at the end of this month. A 1973-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer, he had taken charge as finance secretary in May 2009.
Nath, currently the senior most officer in the finance ministry, will be the first woman to occupy the finance secretary's chair in North Block.
She has been working as secretary in the expenditure department of the finance ministry since April 2008. Nath is due to retire on 31 March.
Meanwhile, R Gopalan, a 1976-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer, has been appointed economic affairs secretary. Gopalan is currently the financial services secretary in the finance ministry and is likely to take charge from 1 February.
The changes in finance ministry come at a time when finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is working on the 2011-12 budget, which is to be presented in the Lok Sabha on 28 February.
