Team Anna’s anti-graft stir among top 10 ‘Time’ stories
08 Dec 2011
India's economic growth story is undoubtedly big; Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement is perhaps even bigger. The 'Hazare movement', as it may be termed, for a strong anti-corruption watchdog has been named among the top 10 news stories in the world this year by the influential Time magazine.
A section of the Indian media likes to believe that the country and its pathetic ambitions to become a global powerhouse are important to the world. But, generally, India occupies minimal column space in Western newspapers, which are far more interested in the 'Arab Spring' involving oil-rich countries.
Nonetheless, 'Team Anna' has clearly made some waves – perhaps thanks to the burgeoning Indian diaspora across the world.
The killing of terrorist Osama bin Laden was the top attention-grabbing headline, followed by the Arab Spring revolution in North Africa, according to the magazine.
Time magazine compiled 54 wide-ranging lists of the top 10 happenings in 2011 in the field of politics, entertainment, business, sports and pop culture.
Among the 'Top 10 World-News Stories' is 'Anna Hazare's Hunger Fasts Rock India'. The magazine said, "In a year with more than its share of protests worldwide, perhaps the most striking act of dissent took place in India, where the country's ruling coalition took flak for a host of corruption cases implicating a number of leading politicians."
